On our latest episode we traveled to Washington County in Upstate New York, specifically Salem. What you’ll find here is an abundance of agriculture, recreation, and peacefulness that helps you detach from your hectic schedule. While here we visited Masala Farm which stands on land that has been farmed since 1771. Featuring almost seventy acres of land, the property has several barns, a corn granary, chicken coop, smokehouse, well house, and event a guest cottage. The several bodies of water are also great for trout fishing in the Spring!
Spending their weekends in Salem, NY, has given the owners, Charlie and Suvir, the opportunity to disconnect. They’ve owned this magical property for 12 years. Suvir, a celebrity chef, uses the spacious open concept kitchen to entertain guests. He mostly entertains friends and family, but he is also known to bring up patrons from the restaurants he’s worked in NYC. In addition, much of the livestock, vegetables, herbs, and more are actually used to create meals. Talk about a true farm-to-table experience!

You may be asking what was the significance of our visit to Masala Farm. Due to it’s location you feel like you’re out in the middle of nowhere, but still only an hour from Saratoga/Albany, and very close to Vermont. It is the perfect place to relax, especially for those looking to escape metropolitan areas such as New York City. If you’re feeling like you need some more action then head east or west! Drive in to Saratoga for a day to enjoy a mix of suburban and urban lifestyles. During the winter you’re just a short drive from Vermont’s robust list of ski resorts.
After wandering around the farm for a bit we went inside to see how this traditional farmhouse has been transformed into a modern entertainers dream. As you walk in you are greeted by a massive open kitchen that welcomes you to hang around and socialize. We grabbed some herbs to cook with and got right at it. We highly suggest that if you’re interested in a calming place to unwind for the weekend that you check out Masala Farm and other places throughout the scenic Washington County.
